M'bishi Motors Faces Big Recall As Hidden Complaints
Surface
TOKYO (Nikkei)--Mitsubishi Motors Corp. will
finally report to Transport Minister Hajime Morita on
Wednesday customer complaints about six major vehicle
defects that will involve the recall of 459,000
passenger cars, and three that will result in the
recall of 55,000 trucks, company sources said Monday.
In each of the cases, vehicles failed to meet safety
standards.
The major automaker will also report five less
serious auto defects that do not violate safety
standards but do require measures to improve safety
and reduce air pollution. The cases will lead to
180,000 recalls.
Conducted earlier this month, the ministry's
on-the-spot inspection of Mitsubishi Motors found that
the company had failed to report a total of 14
defects.
Following the preliminary findings of an ongoing
in-house investigation, Katsuhiko Kawasoe, company
president, will meet the press on Wednesday to explain
why the automaker failed to disclose all information
on customer complaints.
The company plans to complete the investigation by
the end of August.
